Edification and Worship

The Edification Committee is the arm that oversees the smooth running of the Church activities. Their responsibilities includes:
1.    Admonition
2.    Edification
3.    Teaching
The teachings are categorised for the sake of our various members, some of the teachings are designed for the Visitors, the Children, the New Converts and the Adults.

Edification:
Edification is the Greek word oikodome or oikodomeo.
Oikodome comes from the root words: oikos meaning house; and doma meaning rooftop. It is a figurative word which means

"to build up to the roof" or simply "to build up."

There are many ways edification committee at Edmonton Church of Christ seek to build up its members based on scriptures.

Based on Jude 20, “But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.” Edification committee at seeks to build individuals, families and congregation as a whole.

Building at Individual level

“Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
“Let each of us please his neighbour for his good, leading to edification.” (Romans 15:2)
“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.” (Romans 14:19)

As a result of the above scriptural passages, edification through appointment for teachings, sermons, singing and other elements of worship strongly encourages individuals to edify one another through personal studies, personal contact with encouraging and spiritual words that builds one another.

 Building at the family level
‘’I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also’’ (II Timothy 1:5)

Family members at Edmonton Church of Christ are regularly given daily bible study materials that are useful for family studies as we believe stronger and well knit families will lead to a stronger and vibrant church as the church is largely made up of individual families. Just as Timothy received his godly instructions from his family, a spirit based family will also be able to impact the necessary spiritual gift unto the younger generations.

Building at the congregational level
‘’What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up’’ (1 Corinthians 14:26)

Here Brother Paul stresses the fact that let all things be done for edification. Again in Ephesians 4:11-16. One of the purposes of the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers stated in verse 12 was for edifying the body of Christ. The above make it mandatory for the edification committee to identify those members gifted in the various areas mentioned above and among others like singing to edify the church at our meetings.

In view of this we have various meetings such as:
•    Whole congregation for words of encouragement
•    Bible study classes for adult, intermediate, new converts, children and one for visitors. These groupings are necessary as each group has a different need that needs to be met.
•    Men’s training sessions
•    Women training sessions
•    Men’s bonding sessions
•    Sisters meetings
•    Singing
•    Fasting and prayers
•    Lectureships
•    Visiting other sister churches

All the above are done to give an ordained worship to the Father in truth and spirit in our assemblies. (Hebrews 10:25; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 14:26)
